If you find yourself on vacation in Belize, sure, have an Pina Colada – it’s a laff, a hoot, the holiday spirit, etc. Have another – on the same night – and you’re probably wondering, “Why?”. We won’t mention it again, just chalk it up to sunstroke. Have another Pina Colada the next night, and it’s time for an intervention.

Instead treat yourself to a tasting of some fine Belizean rums. Sure, some are more suited to cockatails or the ubiquitos rum and coke – however there are a couple of standouts. Both 1 Barrel and 5 Barrel rums are good, standalone drinks – just serve as you would a fine malt whiskey. With a little water if you like, or an ice cube, or just neat. In fact the 1 Barrel is so good, it has one several awards including Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2009.

The 1 Barrel is available in the US online at K and L wines, for $13.99 – not a typo – well, not by me anyway. The 5 Barrel is not available in the US yet, but if you’re in Belize be sure to pick up a bottle – or 2.
